I know I’m not the only one who feels like there’s something so rejuvenating about escaping into a space where you can be completely creative, without interruptions or distractions. As I’m writing this, I just got back from an incredible art retreat in Italy, but let’s face it—getting away for an in-person retreat isn’t always realistic. That’s why hosting a creative retreat at home can be the perfect way to recharge, explore your creativity, and enjoy a weekend dedicated to art and relaxation.

Trust me, with a few intentional touches, you can create an inspiring environment right in your own space. All it takes is a little planning.

If you’re new here, hi. I’m Jenna Rainey. As a watercolor artist (and someone who’s always encouraging others to tap into their inner creativity), I’m here to guide you through setting up your own creative retreat at home.

Whether it’s a weekend of painting, journaling, or just soaking in some quiet time, this retreat can help you reset, find inspiration, and connect with yourself. So, let’s talk about what it takes to plan a refreshing and art-filled weekend retreat right from home!

Set Intentions

Before anything else, take a few moments to set your intentions for the weekend. Think about what you’d like to focus on: Do you want to create art, relax and reset, or spend the weekend diving into personal reflection or goal setting?

Setting intentions helps you stay centered and keeps your retreat from becoming just another to-do list. (Think of it as giving yourself permission to fully embrace this time!) For instance, you could choose something simple like “connect with my creative side” or “try something new.”

Choose Dates You’ll Keep

An at-home creative retreat can easily slip through the cracks if you don’t treat it as sacred time. Pick dates that you’ll truly protect—and commit to them. It doesn’t need to be a full weekend; even one full day or a series of evenings can work wonders. Block the time off in your calendar and let others know you’ll be “away,” just as if you were at an out-of-town retreat. (And yes, that means saying “no” to other plans or distractions!)

Gather Your Supplies

Once you’ve set your dates, gather all the supplies you’ll need. For a creative retreat, I recommend having a few key art supplies on hand—think watercolor paints, brushes, a sketchbook, and any other tools you enjoy using. (And don’t forget basics like paper towels, a jar for water, and maybe even some snacks!) Having everything ready to go will save you time and help you feel prepared, so you can dive right in without hunting down supplies mid-retreat.

Make a Schedule (But Include Free Time)

Next, I recommend creating a loose schedule for your creative retreat at home, but remember, flexibility is key. Start with a morning activity like meditation or journaling to set a calm, grounded tone for the day. Schedule time for activities like painting, goal setting, or even going for a walk. Just make sure to include blocks of free time to let your mind wander or just take a nap if you feel like it (because yes, that counts as creative rest!).

Your schedule might look something like this:

  • Morning: Meditation and journaling
  • Late Morning: Watercolor painting
  • Lunch Break: Enjoy a mindful meal
  • Afternoon: Free time (nap, read, or simply relax)
  • Evening: Reflect on the day or set goals for the future

Remember, this schedule is just a guide, not a rulebook. Feel free to follow your energy and let your creativity flow naturally.

Choose a Dedicated Space

Choosing a specific area for your creative retreat at home can make a huge difference in how you feel. Whether it’s your dining table, a corner of your living room, or even a cozy nook on your balcony, designate a space that feels peaceful and inspiring. Set it up with everything you need for the weekend: your art supplies, journal, water bottle, and maybe even a small plant or candle to make it feel extra inviting. Just knowing you have a “retreat zone” can help you get into a creative mindset.

Add Ambiance (Lighting, Music, Scents)

Speaking of a dedicated space, the right ambiance can make your creative retreat feel truly magical. Lighting, music, and scents can really set the mood. Soft, warm lighting (like candles or string lights) can create a cozy vibe, while natural light is perfect for longer art sessions. Play some calming music or nature sounds  and don’t underestimate the power of scent—essential oils like lavender or eucalyptus can instantly make your space feel more relaxing. (I personally love lighting a candle before I start painting—it’s like a little ritual that helps me ease into creative mode.)

Activity Ideas for Your Creative Retreat

Now comes the fun part—deciding on activities that feel both rejuvenating and enjoyable. Here are a few ideas to get you started:

1. Watercolor Painting

As a watercolor artist, I have to recommend making time for a painting session. Watercolor is a forgiving medium, perfect for experimentation and self-expression. You could try painting something seasonal, abstract, or even just play with color mixing and see what happens. (And if you’re new to watercolor, the Everyday Watercolor Companion Course is a perfect place to start!)

2. Journaling

Next, journaling is a wonderful way to check in with yourself. Write about your goals, reflect on what’s been inspiring you, or simply jot down your thoughts as they come. Journaling helps clear mental clutter and can even spark new ideas for your art.

3. Meditation

A few minutes of meditation can be a fantastic way to start or end your retreat. Close your eyes, take deep breaths, and focus on grounding yourself. Even a short meditation session can help you feel more centered and open to creativity.

4. Walks

Taking a walk, especially outside, can be incredibly inspiring. Use this time to observe colors, shapes, and details around you. Let your mind wander, and you might find inspiration for your next creative project.

5. Future Goal Setting

Lastly, I always like to use part of a retreat to think about your creative goals. That’s right—your goals shouldn’t be limited to health, career, and relationships. Your creativity matters. Where would you like to grow as an artist? What skills do you want to develop? Set some intentions for the coming months—this can be both motivating and grounding.

End the Weekend with Reflection

As your creative retreat at home wraps up, take a few minutes to reflect on your experience. Write down what you enjoyed, any challenges you encountered, and how you felt throughout the weekend. Reflection can help solidify any insights or inspiration that comes up, so you carry those feelings with you into everyday life. (And it’s a nice way to close the retreat on a thoughtful note.)
