Do you ever try and push your creative boundaries?
There's a simple yet profound adage that goes, “If you always do what you've always done, you'll always get what you've always got.” OOOOOOF! Right?
Well, this rings especially true in the realm of creativity. Whether you're an artist, writer, musician, or any other type of creator, to truly evolve and innovate, it's imperative to venture beyond the familiar. Stepping outside of your comfort zone, though intimidating, can be the very catalyst that propels you to new artistic heights.
Why Push Boundaries?
First, let's dive into the why. Pushing boundaries in creativity can lead to:
- Unique Ideas and Innovations: Staying in a safe zone can limit the breadth and depth of your creations. By exploring the unfamiliar, you expose yourself to a world of new ideas and inspirations.
- Personal Growth: Like a muscle that requires stretching to avoid atrophy, your creative abilities grow stronger with use and challenge. Breaking barriers can lead to a richer understanding of your own capabilities.
- Resilience: Facing and overcoming challenges bolsters your resilience. Each time you navigate the unfamiliar successfully, you build confidence in your ability to handle future hurdles.
How to Push Creative Boundaries
- Challenge Your Own Assumptions
We all have preconceived notions and beliefs about what's ‘right' or ‘wrong' in our creative processes. Start by questioning these. For instance, if you always thought a particular color palette wasn't for you, experiment with it. Maybe you've shied away from certain topics in your writing—dive into them.
- Surround Yourself with Diversity
Interacting with people from diverse backgrounds, industries, and thought processes can drastically expand your horizons. Attend workshops, join new groups, or simply engage in conversations with people whose views differ from yours. Their perspectives can be invaluable.
- Set ‘Stretch' Goals
Instead of setting easily achievable goals, set ones that make you stretch a bit further. If you're a writer who usually pens 500 words a day, try aiming for 1,000. If you're an artist accustomed to pencil sketches, dabble in watercolors.
- Embrace Discomfort
Change is uncomfortable. Recognize that this discomfort isn't a sign of failure but rather an indicator that you're venturing into the unknown. Instead of shying away from it, lean into the discomfort. It’s in these moments that true growth happens.
- Learn from Failures
Remember, every time you push your creative boundaries, you're taking a risk—and sometimes, risks lead to failures. Instead of seeing these as setbacks, view them as learning experiences. Dissect what went wrong, adapt, and move forward with newfound knowledge.
Reaping the Rewards of Pushing Boundaries
Going beyond your comfort zone is akin to setting out on an adventure: you'll encounter unexpected challenges, but also unforeseen delights. Some benefits of pushing your creative boundaries include:
- A Richer Portfolio: By trying various styles, mediums, or genres, you'll have a broader range of works to showcase.
- Improved Problem-Solving Skills: Venturing into the unknown often requires innovative solutions. Over time, this hones your problem-solving abilities.
- Enhanced Reputation: People admire those who dare to be different. By consistently pushing boundaries, you might just become a trendsetter in your field.
In Conclusion
Stagnancy is the enemy of creativity. While it's natural to gravitate toward the familiar, especially when it feels safe and comfortable, the magic often happens just beyond that comfort zone. Embrace the journey of pushing your boundaries. In the vast expanse of the unknown, you'll not only discover untapped creative potential within yourself but also gather unforgettable experiences along the way.

Thanks so much for this post, I will use the ideas as I continue creating a piece I am working on. It is exactly the how-to, I was looking for…. You’re not telling me what to do, but simply how to push beyond what’s comfortable, and I do love that. Writing isn’t yet my field of expertise but from the bottom of my ADHD brain and OCPD heart, THANKS, THANK YOU AND Gracias so much!!!
Hi Jenna,
This October i participated in “Inktober”. I drew a picture based on the word of the day, every day of the month, using a black pen. I’m taking the Art Within so I used a lot of the sketching foundation lessons. i really stretched trying to get used to creating with just the marks of a pen! Thanks for TAW – I’m really enjoying it so far and it’s already “pushed” me to do something new.
Yay!! We’re so glad to hear that Penelope!!
