Where should you be spending your energy? It wasn’t until about 3 years into my business that I decided I had to make a change. In order for me to spend my time growing my business and not just hustling from one client to the next, I had to start some form of passive income. And I’ve found 3 hacks to generating passive income that I want to let YOU in on!
I don’t know about you, but keeping up with social media is overwhelming, right?
…your Pinterest account is collecting spider webs
…your Instagram “strategy” is just to post when you feel like it or when you have work to show
…your blog…….well, you’ll get to that someday…
I get it. It feels like you’re being stretched in a million different directions, and is all of this social media stuff even necessary?!
When I first started, Instagram was chronological and there was no such thing as “influencers.” People used it to post photos of their dogs and dimly lit quesadillas…it wasn’t nearly the monster it is today and yes, it was much easier to gain momentum back then. Pssst…there’s still ways you can beat the algorithm and gain followers, though. I wrote a post about it HERE.
But guess what?
While everyone was focused on growing their Instagrams, my Pinterest was blowing UP.
I used Pinterest for personal use and would post my work weekly. It wasn’t much, but I was showing up. It was a place I used for inspiration, gathering recipe ideas, and outfit ideas and thought, “hey! I should post my work here too just cuz!”
…and you know what happened?
From the first year of my business and still to this day, Pinterest has been THE #1 way I get new traffic to my website, new inquiries and leads…it’s crazy.
This means new clients, customers, you get it.
This platform allowed for me to attract work and generate income with little to no work up front…literally just post and ghost over here and I still get emails from people who find me from pins from yeeears ago.
So, what am I trying to say?
Think deeper. Think beyond Instagram and beyond the number by your name…popularity doesn’t pay bills people, but strategy, market research, keywords, and marketing DO if you know what you’re doing.
Want to know some of my biggest tips for Pinterest marketing?
1. Tell the viewer what your post, product, service, etc. is on the pin image. Describe what you’re pinning within a short, condensed sentence and display that overtop the image. This is the eye grabber, so if it’s applicable to your potential customer, they will click.
2. Long form keywords. So I’m assuming since you’re receiving this email, you already downloaded and read through the Pinterest Keyword research guide…but basically, in keyword research, long-form keywords are your sweet spot. Think about it! The term “interior design” is 2 words. It’s broad and there are probably tons of pins using that phrase. But just by getting more specific and saying “modern bathroom interior design” or “jungle inspired interior design,” you’re narrowing your audience and the chances of you appearing higher on the results page are much greater!
3. Check your friggin’ broken links. We all change our slugs (URLs) and content from time to time, right? Well, I know it’s a chore, but trust me…you don’t want a pin of one of your products floating around to all of the sudden gain traction and have a broken link! Check your content, update your content, your links, your copy and images if needed…it’s crucial for service your potential customer as best as you possibly can!

When it came time for me to pivot in my business and go from creating custom stationery to licensing, I tested things out on Creative Market first. I opened a profile, uploaded some of my work, and posted a couple of pins on Pinterest that led back to my creative market site. I NEVER promote my creative market, but these pins alone generate about $75-$100/month in revenue. Pretty cool, right? Imagine what the shop would do if I was pinning regularly, adding more to my shop on a regular basis, and promoting! Sheesh…maybe I should… 😉
Anyway. Start small. Don’t get overwhelmed, and just think what ONE HOUR a week devoted to Pinterest can do for your business!
